Playing in France at a lovely festival

Jill Elliot - I started teaching seventeen years ago when a friend asked me to help her children learn some fiddle tunes.  The following year the Hibernia Centre was formed and I became the fiddle group leader in the days when we were overwhelmed if ten musicians turned up.  There are now over 500 members on the list and we are recognised as the area's foremost Centre for Irish traditional music often hosting workshops with world- famous musicians.

That same year I increased the number of groups I ran from the house, and we built an extension so we could all fit in!

About this time I started playing for barn dances as a fiddler with the Old Fox Band - a well established band for over 30 years.  Since then I have played in many musical line-ups both playing for dancing and playing for listening.

I have been a barn dance caller for parties, weddings and fundraising events for the past 15 years and in the past 6 years have started the Portishead Monthly Community Barn Dance and the weekly social morning with English country dancing every Tuesday morning - it's a great way for people to make new friends.

About 5 years ago I teamed up with musician Mark Wallis to play for Irish Set Dancing - a type of dancing I also love to dance myself and which I can thoroughly recommend - and there are plenty of opportunities every week to go to several dances in the Bristol area - at some of which we play the live music.

Quite a contrast to the dance music, we offer sing-along sessions of favourite well-known songs from 1900-1960s at Care Homes.  We cover a large geographic area from Devon, Somerset, North Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol.  We take along our own illustrated books with large print and we also take percussion instruments for a fully interactive programme of music and song therapy.

We are also booked by entertainments co-ordinators for retirement homes and social clubs.  As well as sing along we offer a slide show presentation on Music and Dance of the British Isles and Ireland, which includes playing the tunes that accompany the particular dances and a practical demonstration of a couple of dance traditions.

We also offer seasonal programmes such as Christmas, Harvest, St. George's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Burns night.

Most of my Friday and Saturday nights are spent fiddling or calling the moves for barn dances whilst the night is danced away!  I also play in different musical line-ups with various musicians for other events.

Calling at a dance

The Perfect Cure Duo

In the main, the tunes we cover are the dance tunes from Ireland, England, and Scotland.  Tunes are taught  by ear in the traditional method.    In addition to learning by ear, the music, tabulature, and fingering is available in the beginners and intermediate groups as a learning aid.

The dots and fingering is also available for the tunes we play for the weekly and monthly dancing, so this enables those who can already read music to join in immediately with our round-the-table sessions and to come and play at the weekly and monthly dances.

Every week you not only have the opportunity to learn the tunes, but get to play the tunes at  dances plus we play at various community and fundraising events throughout the year.

So now you can learn an instrument and use what you have learned to practical use from day one!!

Playing traditional music is tremendous fun for all.  It is instantly accessible even in your first lesson as a complete beginner - but don't take my word for it - read what others have said by clicking on the links on the left - or better still,  come along and try for yourself!

Maggie - Charity Finance Worker

"Fast approaching my 40th birthday, I decided to learn to play the fiddle and get married - not necessarily in that order!   I had played piano as a child, and the theoretical basis had left me unable to play by ear or join in with others..... (this was to change very quickly when I found out about Jill's groups...)

Learning with Jill is great, as you're with like-minded people who just enjoy the music (including people who'd hitherto considered themselves 'unmusical'!).

Playing with beginners like myself at the weekly groups meant I was able to build confidence; playing with others without getting too precious about it............ If you've been put off music before, this would be a great way to get into it, it's loads of fun."

I also host a number of house concerts and other music and dance events each year, plus a variety of visiting tutors giving workshops for various instruments.

If you would like to be included on an e mailing list for house concerts and/or visiting tutor workshops, please just e mail me. jill@fiddlelessons.co.uk  See photo gallery for previous events - for forthcoming events please see dates and times page  and scroll down the page
