"I first picked up the violin when I was 10 then had a lay off of about 35 years before returning to the Hibernia. It is an oasis in the middle of Avonmouth and it's very calming and diverting playing with others after a demanding week at work. The group and individual lessons with Jill are an added bonus and have been very helpful in developing technique. A great thing about the 'Bristol' fiddle experience is that it's open to all and is an excellent way of communicating."

Graham - UWE lecturer

"I remember being captivated by a performance of Irish fiddle music years ago but never imagined I would play.  I particularly enjoy learning the fiddle tunes in a group.  Playing them with other people is great fun and even as a beginner the pace is exhilarating at times!  Hibernia is great.  The teachers are very skilled and you spend the morning immersed in lots of wonderful music; hearing the music played fabulously and aspiring to one day do the same. Jill offers evening groups and individual lessons so it is easy to get extra tuition and extend your repertoire, particularly as Hibernia is only held twice a month."

 Lindsay -  Botanist -

"I'm an occasional student at Hibernia group fiddle lessons and in a way that's what I like about it, the fact that I can drop in on a Saturday morning when I'm passing by and enjoy a few hours of music making without being tied in to a particular teacher or a course for weeks and weeks and without booking ahead. There'll always be a new tune or two to show for it, a range of abilities or technical issues to choose from and knowledgeable people to answer queries. If I lived nearby I'd go every week. I'm self-taught on the violin, having concentrated on playing the piano up until the time my great aunt left me her violin and I became inspired by Irish music playing in Bristol pubs when I was a student in the '70s. I've been trying to get to grips with Irish fiddle technique every since and Hibernia do a brilliant job of making lessons so accessible and interesting. Please keep it going!
